York Rotary Dragon Boats Race hope for record year

The York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge is on course for the best fund-raising year after teams fiercely competed on the River Ouse last Sunday, 14th July.

The event saw 36 teams battling through heats to reach the grand final, which featured the top six teams including our very own YO1 Radio Rules the Waves who were rowing to raise funds for Three Bears Foundation. Donations can still be takenuntil 31 August.

THERE IS STILL TIME TO HELP US CELEBRATE OUR SUCCESS AND REACH OUR TARGET OF RAISING £2,000. So, please continue to help.

Every donation, however small, would be very welcome

The challenge occurred between Scarborough Bridge and Lendal Bridge, with the riverbanks packed with both competitors and spectators.

YO1 Radio's Wayne Chadwick and Dave Parker were broadcasting live from the event nearly all day. Interviews took place with Mark Burn ( Chair of Three Bears Foundation), Rachael Maskell MP and Fiona Fitzpatrick, Sheriff of York.

Brian Joscelyne, co-leader of the York Rotary Dragon Boat organising team, announced that the race had already raised £85,000 for charity, with more donations expected.

The grand final saw Ged Bell Butchers' team, The Growlers, claim victory with a time of 54.65 seconds.

In second place was the YO1 Radio Rules the Waves followed by North Yorkshire Police/Fire Service, Matthias Garn Master Mason and Partner, Door 84, and Portakabin.

Wayne Chadwick of YO1 Radio, reflected on the day: "Despite the weather, it was a special day at the Dragon Boat Race. We were raising funds for the Three Bears Foundation, but in earnest, all 36 rowing teams were rowing in the same direction for their charity. Congratulations to them also!"

This annual event, now in its 22nd year, has cumulatively raised £1.5 million for local charities. Brian Joscelyne also revealed that next year’s challenge is set for Sunday, 13th July.

We NEARLY did it!

YO1 Radio was thrilled to take part in this year's Rotary Club of York Dragon Boat Races, on SUNDAY 14th JULY 2024 on the River Ouse between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge.

Last year we managed a VERY respectable THIRD PLACE - but this year we went one better, finishing in SECOND PLACE - a fantastic result!!

Even better, we won all three of our heats, with times below one minute in each - AND we secured the Rotary Club's OUSE TROPHY for the best time outside of the final.

Not bad, eh?

We're very proud of all of our team.

For 2024, we are raising awareness and funds for THE THREE BEARS FOUNDATION - a local charity supporting research into pancreatic cancer.

Our YO1 Radio Rules The Waves team featured some of our presenters, partners and friends from the Three Bears.

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO CAME ALONG TO SAY HELLO AND SUPPORT US!

Our Captain for the day, was our very own Gemma Taylor, who obviously did a great job!

WE WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD THROW A FEW QUID IN OUR DIRECTION - AS OUR DONATION PAGE IS STILLOPEN AND  WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL 31st AUGUST. The links are at the top and bottom of this page.

Two-thirds of the funds we raise will go to The Three Bears Foundation, with the remainder to the Rotary charities.

Over the last 20 years, the Rotary Club of York Dragon Boat Races have raised over £1.4 million. A fantastic achievement.

We've set ourselves a target for this year at a more modest £2,000 - and we'd love to have your help in reaching that target!

If you'd like to support the cause, we'd love you to visit our 'Enthuse' fundraising page, by following the link below. Every donation, however small, will go to some fantastic local causes.
