THE YO1 RADIO SPORTS AWARDS ARE BACK!

Get ready to celebrate the best of sport in York and North Yorkshire – the YO1 Radio Sports Awards 2026 are coming! Supported by York College & University Centre, the awards will take place at Cineworld York on June 8th, with an unforgettable IMAX experience.

We’re recognising excellence across the sporting community – from athletes and teams to coaches and volunteers – in 12 exciting award categories. Come along, cheer on your favourites, and be part of an inspiring night celebrating local sporting talent. You may notice there are currently 10 award categories available to nominate for at the moment. We’ll be revealing the final two categories very soon, so keep an eye out for more exciting announcements.

Award Categories:

Cain North Community Hero Award (Sponsored by Clifton Park Hospital)

Honouring the life and legacy of Cain North, whose courage, kindness and positivity inspired people across York and North Yorkshire. This award recognises individuals who use sport to lift others, unite communities and create lasting change through compassion, resilience and selflessness.


Young Sportsperson of the Year (Sponsored by York RLFC)

Recognising outstanding young athletes aged 18 or under who have achieved success at regional, national, or international level in the past year.


Active Education of the Year (Primary) (Sponsored by Flamingo Land)

Celebrating a primary school that places sport and physical activity at the heart of school life, ensuring every child is included and encouraged to be active.


Secondary & Higher Education Sports Team of the Year

Awarded to a school, college, or university team that has shown innovation, teamwork, and exceptional sporting performance.


Breakthrough Athlete or Team of the Year (Sponsored by York St John University)

For an individual or team that has made major progress in their sport, overcoming challenges and exceeding expectations through dedication and resilience.


Diversity and Inclusivity Award (Sponsored by The Riverfront York)

Recognising a club, organisation, or individual who has shown outstanding commitment to making sport more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming to all.


Coach of the Year (Sponsored by The Milner York)

Celebrating an inspirational coach whose dedication and leadership has had a significant impact on their sport, team, or athletes.


Volunteer of the Year (Sponsored by York BID)

Honouring the volunteers who keep local sport running, recognising their commitment, passion, and behind-the-scenes contribution.


Community Team/Club of the Year (Sponsored by Make it York)

Awarded to a team or club that has united its community through sport, creating opportunities and making a lasting positive impact.


Community Champion of the Year (Sponsored by York City FC)

Recognising an individual, group, or club that has inspired others to be active and supported physical and mental wellbeing through sport.


Disability Sportsperson of the Year (Sponsored by Malton Coachworks)

Celebrating an outstanding disabled sportsperson aged 18 or over who has achieved significant success over the past year.

The College, situated on Sim Blak Lane, offers a wide range of education options across entry level, through to degrees, higher technical qualification, accredited professional courses and apprenticeships. In addition, the College has a Sports Development Centre, where the announcement was made, and where student athletes from 16 to 19 can combine a full-time education programme with high quality coaching in Men’s and Women’s football, rugby league, basketball and netball.
