York RLFC, Newcastle Thunder, and Australia’s Penrith Panthers have launched a groundbreaking three-year High Performance & Pathways Partnership aimed at fast-tracking the development of players, coaches, and community programmes across the North East.

This bold new collaboration marks a turning point for Newcastle Thunder, who are rebuilding following their 2024 ownership restructure. With a fresh focus on sustainability and progression, Thunder are targeting a return to the Championship within two seasons and establishing themselves as League 1 playoff contenders.

As part of the partnership, York RLFC will bolster Newcastle’s player and coaching set-up with additional performance support, including dual-registered and key loan players. This strategic move allows Thunder to maintain competitive strength on the pitch while expanding vital grassroots, schools, and community engagement programmes.

A notable shift includes Chris Thorman joining York Knights’ coaching staff full-time, bringing valuable leadership to Mark Applegarth’s squad as they chase success in the Betfred Championship.

A major figure in the new era is Graham Steadman, who will oversee Newcastle’s Rugby Department. A former Great Britain Rugby League international with experience coaching at the highest levels of both rugby codes—including roles with Scotland RU and Newcastle Falcons—Steadman will also serve as interim Head Coach. Long-term, he will mentor coaching talent across the region and spearhead hands-on training with Thunder’s current men’s squad.

In a major step forward for the women's game, the partnership will also launch a Newcastle Thunder Women’s Programme—a shared goal across all three clubs to expand opportunities for women and girls in rugby league.

Meanwhile, Penrith Panthers—already in a strong working relationship with York RLFC—will now support Newcastle Thunder’s development pathways directly. Senior Panthers staff are due in Newcastle in the coming weeks to help tailor a pathways programme reflecting the North East’s distinct sporting character and potential.

Keith Christie, Director at Newcastle Thunder, said:

“This is about strengthening what already exists and bringing more opportunity to rugby league in the North East. York have shown genuine belief in our people and our potential, and this partnership gives us a platform to grow. We’re especially proud to welcome someone of Graham Steadman’s calibre. He’s a fantastic leader and educator who understands this region.”

Clint Goodchild, Chairman of York RLFC, commented:

“Newcastle Thunder has deep roots and a passionate community. Our role is to help unlock the potential that’s already there. It’s a win-win – our younger players get crucial game time, and Thunder get support to grow sustainably. With Graham’s involvement, the credibility and quality of this partnership go through the roof.”

Matthew Cameron, CEO of Penrith Panthers, added:

“We’re proud to support this strategic, collaborative approach that prioritises people, pathways, and community. It’s about building long-term strength in the game, and this partnership has all the right ingredients to inspire the next generation across the North East.”

This landmark partnership arrives at a critical juncture for Newcastle, who are still seeking their first win since 2023. With renewed purpose, expert backing, and strong community links, the club is now firmly focused on writing a new chapter.

The initiative will also see Newcastle and York collaborate on a series of foundation-led rugby festivals, school visits, and development clinics—bringing the sport to more young people and communities across the region than ever before.
