YORK Knights are the 2025 AB Sundecks 1895 Cup winners!
A dramatic golden point from captain Liam Harris won Mark Applegarth’s side silverware for the first time ever at Wembley Stadium.
The Knights rose to the occasion at Wembley to defeat Featherstone Rovers 5-4, winning silverware for the first time under Head Coach Applegarth, as captain Harris scored a dramatic golden point.
The current crop of York players have now officially written their name in history, lifting a trophy for the first time since 2018 with their 1895 Cup success, in what was also their first-ever win at Wembley.
An admittedly stagnant start to the match had its first celebrations, coming in the Featherstone end, with 11 minutes played.
After winning a penalty, Ben Reynolds converted to gift the West Yorkshire side a lead despite the rain having a clear effect on proceedings.
It was a double from Liam Harris that sent York into half-time in front, his first of which coming from a central position that had drawn the scores level at 2-2.
And with the hooter sounding whilst Harris’ attempt from 45-yards was still in the air, and audacious effort from the Knights captain sent Applegarth’s side inside in control.
Featherstone were behind at the break but soon found themselves even, as another penalty allowed Reynolds to add the two points again.
The two teams headed into the final ten minutes all level, with tensions growing, but neither side could find that breakthrough despite Harris’ late drop goal attempt.
It therefore headed to golden point and extra-time, with the two teams knowing that whoever would register a point next, would be crowned champions of the 1895 Cup.
It was a nervy eight minutes for York, but some persistence from Scott Galeano saw the Knights gain a good position.
The ball was moved centrally to Harris, who wrote his name in the history-books with an incredible effort that won the Knights silverware at Wembley Stadium.
York had booked their spot in the 1895 Cup final after overcoming Halifax Panthers 32-20, Widnes Vikings 39-6 and then Bradford Bulls 28-20 at the LNER Community Stadium, with a first Wembley appearance since 2021.
