York City are thrilled to confirm the signing of seasoned centre-back Ashley Palmer, who will officially join the club on 1st July following his release from Chesterfield.

The 32-year-old defender becomes the latest addition to the Minstermen’s summer rebuild, bringing with him a wealth of experience across both league and non-league football. Palmer links up with City as the eleventh senior club of his career.

Ashley’s journey began at Barnsley, where he developed through the youth system before joining Scunthorpe United in 2009, where he captained the youth side and made his senior debut. Loan spells at Southport and Harrogate Town gave him valuable early experience.

His next steps saw him climb the non-league ranks with Hinckley UnitedDroylsden, and Buxton, before earning promotion from the National League North with North Ferriby United, where he also collected a Player of the Month award.

A move to Guiseley followed, but it was at Stockport County where Palmer truly made his mark. He was a key figure in their rise through the divisions, regularly captaining the side and even finishing as the third top scorer during the 2019/20 campaign. In 2022, he helped the Hatters win the National League title after an epic season-long battle with Wrexham.

Palmer later joined Chesterfield, featuring in a painful play-off final defeat in 2023 before bouncing back the following year to help the Spireites secure the National League title with a whopping 98 points. He played 17 times in all competitions during their return to League Two before departing this summer.

Now, with two promotions already under his belt, Ashley Palmer arrives at the LNER Community Stadium with one goal: to help York City climb the pyramid.

Welcome to York, Ash!
