Minstermen Sign Attacking Midfielder Alex Newby

Alex Newby, York City FC

York City FC have confirmed their second signing of the summer, welcoming experienced attacking midfielder Alex Newby to the LNER Community Stadium.

The 29-year-old will officially become a Minsterman on 1st July, following his departure from fellow National League side Altrincham.

Newby began his football journey in the youth ranks at Bolton Wanderers before a brief spell at hometown club Barrow, where he made a single senior appearance. He then worked his way up the non-league ladder with stints at Kendal Town (loan) and Clitheroe.

It was at Chorley where Newby truly made his mark, racking up over 90 appearances and 24 goals in three seasons — including one against York City in 2018. His time at Chorley also saw him feature in multiple play-off campaigns, playing a key role in the Magpies’ promotion from the National League North.

In 2020, Newby made the leap to League One, signing for Rochdale. Despite the club's relegation in his debut season, he featured in 38 league matches and remained a regular the following season. He left Spotland having made 82 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 8 assists.

Newby then spent two seasons with League Two side Colchester United, including a productive loan spell at Altrincham which turned permanent. His performances helped the Robins reach the play-off semi-finals in 2023/24, and he continued his impressive form last season with 15 goals in 2024/25.

Speaking after signing his York City contract, Newby said:

“It’s brilliant to be here — it’s a great move for me. As soon as it was mentioned, I was really keen to get it done.
Obviously, meeting the manager as well, I’m just really excited to get started.”
