York Knights head coach Mark Applegarth has been named the 2025 Betfred Championship Coach of the Year, capping a remarkable season in which the club has secured silverware, set new standards of consistency, and reached the Championship Grand Final.
Under Applegarth’s leadership, the Knights claimed the League Leaders’ Shield and lifted the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup at Wembley, marking the club’s first-ever triumph at the national stadium. The side also embarked on a 20-match winning streak that underlined their dominance across the campaign.
Their success has set up a fitting finale, with York confirmed as hosts for the 2025 Betfred Championship Grand Final against Toulouse Olympique at the LNER Community Stadium.
The influence of Applegarth’s coaching can also be seen in the recognition afforded to his players. Liam Harris, Paul McShane, and Jordan Thompson have all been shortlisted for the Championship Player of the Year, underlining the depth and balance of a squad that has flourished under his direction.
