York city centre is set to shimmer once again as the city’s much-loved Winter Lights return on Thursday, 13th November, bringing a festive glow to streets and landmarks throughout the colder months.
The annual scheme, delivered by York BID in partnership with Make It York, will see an impressive 175,000 LED lights installed across more than 50 streets, spanning over 15 kilometres of the historic city.
Some of York’s most iconic locations will be illuminated, including St Helen’s Square, Duncombe Place, and the world-famous Shambles, which will be adorned with lit wreaths and small decorated Christmas trees. The lights aim to boost York’s seasonal atmosphere, supporting local businesses by creating a warm and welcoming environment for residents, shoppers, and visitors.
Several popular features are also returning this year. The giant illuminated Santa’s Postbox will once again give children the chance to post their letters to the North Pole, while the much-loved Tree of Light, in partnership with St Leonard’s Hospice, continues as a poignant symbol of York’s community spirit and charitable support.
The snowy projection in St Helen’s Square, first introduced in 2024, also makes its return following overwhelmingly positive feedback from both residents and tourists.
Speaking about the launch, Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID, said:
“The Winter lights are a core part of York’s seasonal atmosphere. They add warmth and character to the city at a time of year when our streets, shops and hospitality businesses welcome visitors from across the UK and beyond. We hope everyone loves them as much as we love bringing them to the city!”
This year’s display also continues York’s commitment to inclusivity. Multi-faith symbols are incorporated into the lighting scheme, celebrating the city’s diversity and ensuring the winter season can be enjoyed by all communities.
With their mix of tradition, creativity and community focus, York’s Winter Lights once again promise to make the city a magical destination throughout the festive period.
