York has claimed the top spot in a UK list of 50 cities measuring quality of life, surpassing Edinburgh, which came second, and Bristol in third.
The Good Growth for Cities Index, produced jointly by accountancy firm PwC and think tank Demos, evaluates social and economic indicators to determine which cities provide the best balance of prosperity, wellbeing, and daily life for residents.
Published annually since 2011, the index assesses key areas including skills, housing, transport, health, jobs, and work-life balance.
York climbed six places from last year to secure its number one ranking, with particularly strong performances in high streets and jobs, key indicators of economic and social prosperity.
The city also scored above average for transport, skills, and work-life balance.
However, the index highlighted areas of concern for York.
The city performed below average for new business growth, and housing affordability was noted as a challenge.
PwC also flagged weaker economic growth forecasts due to York’s reliance on manufacturing.
The Good Growth for Cities Index demonstrates that York is not just growing economically, but doing so in a way that prioritises wellbeing, community, and daily quality of life — factors that matter to residents and businesses alike.
