A much-loved York student whose body was recovered from the River Ouse “fought bravely to stay above the water”, his family has said.
Evan d’Andilly, 19, from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, died after entering the river from Ouse Bridge shortly after 3am on Wednesday, March 5.
In a statement, the teenager’s family said he was “a strong swimmer” and remained above the water for 20 minutes, “waiting for rescue boats to arrive”.
“We are incredible proud of him," they said.
Evan died four days before his 20th birthday.
He was part way through his second year at the University of York studying business management and “looking forward to the future”, his family said.
A University of York spokesperson previously said the university was “shocked and saddened” by Evan’s death and was providing support to staff and students affected.
Evan’s family said they “thought the world of him and there are no words to express our sadness at losing him”.
