The museum has agreed to additional hours of pedestrian access through Central Hall, its new welcome building, which forms part of the new York Central development.
As reported in The Press, residents of the St Peter's Quarter in York said the new hall - which would mean Leeman Road being closed to through traffic – would leave pedestrians and cyclists cut off from easy access to the city centre.
A City of York Council spokesperson said as part of the permissions for the redevelopment of the area, access was agreed for the public to walk through the museum during its opening hours.
A new pedestrian, cycle and road route was also approved.
But the local community requested that the hours of access for the pedestrian route through the museum be reviewed to make it available outside museum opening hours.
