• A LARGE city centre chain has pledged its support for the local community by opening up free bike parking inside its shop.

  Evans Cycles in Coney Street has opened the doors on a new free and secure bicycle storage area, which is intended to make it easier for people to travel into the city by bike over car.

• A motorcyclist in his 20s has died after a crash in North Yorkshire.

  The man was pronounced dead at the scene on the A169 Blue Bank in Sleights, near Whitby, on Tuesday evening (September 16).

• Works on a development featuring almost 1,100 homes on the site of a former York sugar refinery could begin in 2027, according to timescales set out in newly-lodged plans.

  Plans for the first phase of redeveloping the former British Sugar refinery and Manor School site would see 1,097 homes and infrastructure built in six phases up to 2037.

• A new supermarket offering warehouse-style shopping has opened at Clifton Moor Retail Park in York.

  The park’s ‘new and improved’ Food Warehouse opened to excited customers at 8am this morning.

• York council workers have begun removing flags hanging from lampposts around the city.

  The Press went to Foss Islands Road at around 4.30pm on Monday (September 15) and around half-a-dozen flags on the river Foss side had been taken down.

• BOSSES at a fire-hit brewery in York city centre said part of the site will be open with “business-as-usual” today (Tuesday, September 16) - as they paid tribute to firefighters who fought the blaze.

  As reported by The Press, a fire broke out around 2am this morning at Brew York’s taproom in Walmgate. The site includes one of the firm’s breweries, a beer hall and a riverside garden.

• A trusted York employee cheated the school where he worked out of thousands of pounds through a “sophisticated” and “deliberate” fraud, a court heard.

  Steven Shooter, 46, diverted funds meant to benefit students at Millthorpe School into his own bank account by sending out fraudulent invoices, York Magistrates' Court heard.
