Customers and volunteers of a much-loved York charity bookstore have reacted with shock following an announcement that the store could be at risk of closing.
Volunteers at The Amnesty Bookshop, in Micklegate, said they were told the store was at risk of closing its doors earlier this month.
More than 800 people have signed an online petition to "save" the bookshop from the threat of closure. Customers have also been adding their names to a paper petition instore.
Amnesty International, the human rights charity which runs the bookshop, said a consultation is underway and “no final decisions regarding the closure of any shops have been made at this stage”.
A charity spokesperson said a “number of” its stores, including the York venue, were experiencing “significant financial losses” which had impacted the money available to fund its human rights work.
“This is in no way a reflection of the commitment, capability, or work ethic of the team of staff and volunteers that have dedicated their time to operating the shop,” they said.
