ONE of the world’s largest ride-hailing services has obtained a five-year licence to operate in York.
Officers at City of York Council granted Uber the permission via delegated powers.
The council said the company met the conditions of a 12-month licence it awarded in June 2024 which provided time to assess Uber’s suitability for the longer term.
Five years is the longest period such a license can be granted under current legislation.
In 2017, the council refused to renew the Uber licence following a significant data breach and 155 complaints lodged against its drivers in the year leading up to the decision.
Uber’s head of cities Matthew Freckelton said the company was delighted by the latest decision and that expansion into other cities had take place in the last 18 months.
The decision means Uber will continue with a York base - now in the Bonding Warehouse in Terry Avenue - and to recruit local drivers.
