North Yorkshire Police say it happened in the early hours of Wednesday (August 28) and the pair are due to appear at York Magistrates Court today (August 30).
As The Press reported yesterday, the pair were arrested following an incident which occurred between 3.30am and 4am in Piccadilly and North Street.
Police said the arrests followed an immediate and extensive investigation by North Yorkshire Police officers, including CCTV and forensic examination.
On Wednesday the riverside footpath at the rear of the Coppergate Centre as well as an area of North Street Gardens were cordoned off with a police scene guard there throughout the day.
