Two men have been charged with rape after members of the public “came across a distressed woman” in York city centre, police said.

The men from York, aged 20 and 24, are due to appear at York Magistrates’ Court this morning (Friday, July 11).

North Yorkshire Police said the charges relate to an incident in the early hours of Sunday (July 6).

The force said members of the public found the distressed woman in the Pavement area.

“Following an extensive investigation, two men from York aged 20 and 24, were arrested shortly afterwards on 7 July and 8 July,” a police spokesperson said.

“Both have been charged with rape and remanded in custody to appear at York Magistrates’ Court on 11 July 2025.”

Detective Superintendent Fionna McEwan, of North Yorkshire Police’s Major Investigation Team, said the alleged victim continues to be supported by specially trained officers.

“Although reports of this nature are rare, we appreciate that it will be of concern to local people,” DS McEwan said.

“We would like to reassure the public that an extensive and expeditious investigation has been carried out and this is continuing.”
