York Racecourse has relaxed its dress code for the John Smith’s Cup on Friday and Saturday, when the Met Office is predicting afternoon temperatures of 30C and 31C.
Meanwhile, organisers of the crowd-pulling York Dragon Boat Race which takes place on Sunday are urging participants and spectators to be prepared with sun cream and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
With the warm weather already upon us, today (Wednesday) is expected to reach 19C by 9am and rise to 25C by mid-afternoon – with a similar pattern for Thursday as well as strong UV rays and a high pollen count.
County Stand & Hospitality guests at York Races have been told they will not need to wear a formal jacket but a collared shirt and tie is still required for men.
The racecourse’s social media site says: “Shorts are welcome in all areas, so dress to stay cool!”
It is expected to be a day of thrills for the punters, bookies and fashion conscious for one of British racing’s most coveted handicap prizes.
The conditions are thought to be ideal for Harry Charlton’s Hand Of God, who finished sixth out of 18 over a mile and a half in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot last month.
The £200,000 race is invariably a highly competitive affair, over an extended mile and a quarter on Knavesmire.
Trainer Harry Charlton said he seemed in good form, adding: “I’m hoping it lands nicely for him at York on Saturday.”
Of the 26 horses that stood their ground at latest entry stage on Monday, William Haggas looks to have the strongest hand.
