Yesterday (May 21), The Press reported on the "void" - which opened in St Leonard's Place, by the Theatre Royal - and is being worked on by staff from City of York Council.
The council said the cause of the void is unknown, adding that repair works could take around two weeks.
A section of St Leonard’s Place between the Theatre Royal and Red House Antiques Centre has been made into one lane, with temporary traffic lights in place.
Traffic on the A19 in Bootham, Gillygate, and Museum Street has also been affected - with queues building across the city's inner ring road.
The night-time taxi rank in St Leonard’s Place will be suspended for the duration of the works.
Cllr Kate Ravilious, the council’s executive member for transport, reminded people that the affected area of York remains "open for business", despite the works.
