North Yorkshire Police said the incident happened at around 3.30pm on Tuesday, August 27, outside Sainsbury’s in Foss Bank.
"The victim sustained injuries to his head and neck," a force spokesperson said.
"We’re appealing for information about the suspect, who is described as around 70-years-old, large build, short grey hair, and wearing glasses.
"He was believed to have been wearing a blue or turquoise t-shirt and possibly wearing shorts."
