
A York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson told The Press that any risks identified by such claims are incorporated into its patient safety processes to prevent them from happening again.
Seventy-one claims for accident and emergency negligence were lodged against the trust from 2019 to 2024, according to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by medical negligence solicitors firm Medical Negligence Assist.
The findings show that 47 of these claims were settled.
Over the five years, the trust paid out a total of £4,563,679.
The highest amount paid was £2,999,888 in 2023/24 when 20 claims were filed against the trust.
It was £2,578,560 more than the trust paid out the year before when 12 claims were lodged.
Eleven claims were filed against the trust in 2019/20 resulting in £134,545 being paid out by the trust, the lowest pay-out over the five years.
A year later, the number of claims rose to 15 with the trust paying out £558,085.
In 2021/22, 13 claims were lodged resulting in £449,833 being paid out by the trust.
