Crossing The White Line, A Life Sentence by former City goalkeeper Andy Leaning is a memoir of a professional football dream that became reality.
The Howden-born, 62-year-old, says the book draws on his vast experience of the game and tells the story of how he played for York City during the mid-1980s after being a goalie locally for York RI and Rowntrees.
Andy was first offered the chance to become an apprentice at York City as a teenager, but says his elation was cut short when his dad insisted he learns a trade and secured him a job as a joiner at British Rail.
"It was different times, and my dad's advice was 'I think you should get a job son'. I was disappointed, but it made me grow up," said Andy who then went on to get his longed-for chance at a professional football career.
He was playing parks football for Rowntree Mackintosh at the age of 22 when then City manager Denis Smith handed him a professional contract in 1985.
