For many, it marks the end of months of revision and a busy exam period and is a chance to celebrate with friends and teachers.
The balls and proms are held at venues across York and beyond, including the Milner Hotel, the Hilton and the Merchant Adventurers Hall.
In time-honoured tradition, some school leavers go the extra mile each year to make a show-stopping entrance - arriving by tractors, horse and carriages, sports cars, and even on mobility scooters.
