Staff at a York clinic that treats people living with dementia or with eating disorders had ‘inadequate’ food hygiene knowledge, according to inspectors.

The findings led to the Schoen Clinic at Wellen Court, Haxby Road, gaining a one-star rating, meaning ‘major improvement necessary.’

However, the Schoen Clinic says it has taken immediate action following the inspection and the person responsible for the low-rated kitchen no longer works for them.

City of York food hygiene inspectors visited the clinic on March 31. The website of the Food Standards Agency reports a rating of ‘improvement necessary’ for hygienic food handling.

The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were found to be ‘good’ but for management of food safety, it was a matter of ‘major improvement necessary.’

The Press obtained a copy of the inspectors’ report under the Freedom of Information Act.

It said a staff member told the inspector they had been ill with food poisoning two days previously but were handling sandwiches that day. The 48 hour rule meant food handlers must stay away from work after their symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea have ceased to prevent foodborne illness.
