And the city has "areas where people are really struggling", the report's lead author said. The research has prompted York Central MP Rachael Maskell to call for 'urgent' action to address inequality.
The York Human Rights City Network, led by the University of York and the York Centre for Voluntary Service, published its indicator report titled "the state of the city". In the report, figures showed an increase in rough sleepers, users of temporary accommodation, foodbank users and universal credit claimants over the past year.
Published on April 23, the report's author - Fionn Toland - spoke to The Press about its findings. Data was taken from both the 2023/24 financial year, and the full calendar year of 2024.
"I’ve learned not to overreact to year on year changes, and only raise an issue when there’s a trend," Fionn said, reflecting on the nine years this report has been published.
He said that the number of food vouchers fulfilled by the York Foodbank rose from 2,820 to 2,874 - which "stood out" to him.
Fionn said that, in future, he'd like to break the data down to ward-level in York, citing "pockets of deprivation" in the city.
