City of York Council’s executive approved changes including lowering on-street parking fees outside the inner ring road to £3-an-hour from at least £4.85-an-hour for the first two.
Council Labour transport spokesperson Cllr Kate Ravilious said the administration had listed to concerns and recognised some had come too soon but they remained committed to tackling congestion throttling York.
But opposition Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Nigel Ayre said changes aiming to improve an entirely avoidable situation left no one happy and cast doubts on the council’s approach to parking.
Proposals approved on Tuesday, June 3 follow opposition to parking fees which came into effect in April.
Fees increased to £4.85 for the first two hours and £5.30 on Fridays, Saturdays and during events across the city.
New rates approved on Tuesday also include lowering fees at Bishopthorpe Road car park, which saw hikes of more than 500 per cent from 80p-an-hour, to £3-an-hour.
On-street parking fees in Micklegate and Priory Road will be temporarily lowered to £3-an-hour but increases to the new £4.85/£5.30 rates will come on a staggered basis.
