NEU (National Education Union) officials and parents from Millthorpe School in South Bank have organised the event on Wednesday (March 18) to show support for Joe Brothers
– an English teacher at the school.
As previously reported by The Press, the petition, created by an anonymous parent at the school calls for the reinstatement of Mr Brothers – an English teacher and union representative.
The petition claims Mr Brothers was suspended from his position after speaking out against budget cuts at the school.
The event, which is set to be held in the basement of City Screen, is a screening of a short film called The Great Schools Robbery – a feature-length documentary about school academisation and the impact on children, their families, and the wider community.
There will also be a question-and-answer session with director Chester Yang, education journalists, and representatives from the NEU.
One of the organisers for the event, Cathryn Auplish, said: “Parents and the local community want to show support for Mr Brothers. This screening has been organised as we are concerned that a talented and respected teacher is at risk of losing his job.
