ONE of two jockeys injured in a heavy fall at York Races at the weekend was due to undergo surgery this morning, Monday.

Jim Crowley suffered a broken leg and a suspected broken pelvis in the crushing fall at York on Sunday.

Crowley was riding Almeraq in the 4.30pm feature Sky Bet Starman Garrowby Stakes at the York Racecourse Family Fun Day when a gap he was attempting to go through closed in front of him, causing his mount to clip heels and come down.

The horse rolled over Crowley who was riding for his Shadwell bosses in the six-furlong sprint.

Fellow jockey Trevor Whelan, on Tiger Bay, was following close behind in the tight field of nine, and had nowhere to go. He was also brought down, sending Whelan into the turf.

Whelan was also due to undergo an operation after breaking his leg in three places, the Press Association has reported.
