North Yorkshire’s mayor has called for work to begin on a new rail station in Haxby following Government confirmation that the project will go ahead.

Labour Mayor David Skaith said the £24 million scheme would help cut congestion while York Outer MP Luke Charters said the announcement meant the project was no longer in limbo.

But local Liberal Democrats said the project had faced unnecessary uncertainty since it was put under review last year while Conservatives said Labour was failing to deliver on infrastructure projects.

It comes after Labour Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said backing for the new station would come as part of £92bn for road and rail updates announced on Tuesday, July 8.

The secretary of state said the funding would fast-track economic growth and jobs and usher in a new era of renewal and opportunity.

The announcement marked the end of uncertainty which the Haxby scheme has faced since the Labour Government placed the project under review along with others in July last year.

It came after Chancellor Rachel Reeves axed the previous Conservative Government’s £500 million Restoring Your Railways fund as part of efforts to address what she said were unfunded spending commitments.

Haxby Station, which was first approved in 2024, was set to receive £3.5 million from the fund.

York Council has said it remains committed to the project despite last year’s decision and the subsequent review.

The Government has stated the project will put an extra 20,000 people within 3km of a rail station and improve links between York and Leeds.
