Pupils at Kirk Fenton CE Primary School near Tadcaster are celebrating a major success this week as new 20mph speed limit signs are installed through the centre of Church Fenton.
The move follows a year-long campaign, which last April saw the then Year 4 class write over 30 letters to North Yorkshire Council and present a petition signed by residents.
They invited local councillors Andrew Lee (North Yorkshire Council) and Michelle Seguss (Church Fenton Parish Council) into school to explain their concerns and make the case for lowering the speed limit on safety and environmental grounds.
Mrs Walmsley, Head Teacher at Kirk Fenton, said: "It has been so important for our children to learn that they CAN make a difference. This has been a real-life lesson in community engagement, democracy and perseverance — and we are incredibly proud of them."
The children’s campaign was supported throughout by Church Fenton Parish Council, who formally endorsed the proposal, and by local residents. North Yorkshire Council’s Highways Department took the proposal to public consultation in January 2025, and have now implemented the change.
