St Mary’s Bishophill Junior Church Warden Angela Carter said proposals to hike on-street parking charges to up to £5.30 for the first hour came as worshippers prepared to mark Holy Week.
Amy and John Hughes, of the Cads of Micklegate barbershop, said the end to a half-hour stay option threatened to put potential customers for their business and others off.
Cllr Kate Ravilious, York Council’s Labour transport spokesperson, said the hikes have been delayed for further talks with businesses and churches to understand their potential effects.
It comes as the Liberal Democrat opposition group on York Council said they had been contacted by Micklegate residents, businesses and worshippers who were angry about the changes.
The hikes were approved in February as part of the council’s Budget for the 2025-6 financial year.
On-street and city centre car park stays across York now cost £4.85 for the first hour and £9.70 for up to two hours from Sunday to Thursday.
