- the council’s public health lead has said.
York Council’s public health director Peter Roderick said access to betting through smart phone apps and young people being exposed to gambling adverts was behind the trend.
The official told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) more were suffering the consequences of gambling addiction in their families and called for better education and a crackdown on advertising.
Mr Roderick’s comments follow the publication of his annual report which focuses on the health and wellbeing of young people in York this year.
The Next Generation York report stated gambling was emerging as a real and substantial threat to the physical and mental health of young people.
It estimates that 16 per cent of young people in York have gambled and a quarter of those who did had taken money without permission to spend on it.
Almost 15 per cent had had conflicts with friends and family over gambling.
