The crash happened on the A1036 Tadcaster Road, between Sim Balk and the Moor Lane roundabout at Tesco, this morning (Wednesday, September 25).
It involved a motorcycle and a car with police on the scene, according to an eye witness.
The AA said traffic is backed up to St Helens Road and moving slowly.
“Please avoid the area if possible,” added a City of York Council spokesperson.
The crash is affecting bus services in the area.
York Pullman Bus Company said its My 21 service is unable to serve Askham Bar Tesco, Middlethorpe Grove or South Bank due to road closures as a result of the accident.
"Due to an accident near York College the 1010 service from Colton will be unable to serve Askham Bar Tesco or Middlethorpe Grove or South Bank, the police have closed the road," a spokesperson said on X.
Coastliner said the crash was also affecting its bus routes.
