DOZENS of protesters turned out to protest outside council offices in York.

More than 50 people turned out for The York Palestine Assembly protest outside City of York Council's West Offices headquarters in Station Rise at 5pm on Friday (July 25).

It was part of a global day of action to highlight the plight of people starving in Gaza.

All across the UK protesters stood outside Labour party offices and councils banging empty pots and pans with spoons, indicating the empty pots, pans and stomachs of Palestinians.

York residents and visitors alike, ranging in age from three to 80, moved by the haunting images of Palestinian adults and children reduced to skeletons holding their empty pots and pans waiting for any small amount of food aid, brought their own pots and spoons and loudly rang out the sound of solidarity.

Helen Meadows, York Palestine Assembly member, said: “People just want to come together and voice their despair at the situation.

"The idea for the ‘pots and pans’ action came from a young Palestinian journalist, activist and filmmaker in Gaza called Bisan Owda.
