A family has had to evacuate their home and lost irreplaceable items after a burst water main flooded their house.
The Mortimer family came downstairs at the start of the Bank Holiday to find their sitting room underwater and more water pouring into their home in Haxby.
Water was also pouring across the road and a property opposite had to hurriedly erect sandbags to protect their building.
It was the second time in just over a fortnight that a Yorkshire Water water pipe had burst and left hundreds of homes in north York without water.
“It shouldn’t have happened,” said Ben Mortimer. “It’s ruined a lot of our possessions including some very irreplaceable items, photos and so on.”
Despite their frantic attempts to move everything out of the water’s reach, helped by neighbours who rallied round as soon as they realised what was happening, they have lost furniture and many other items.
