North Yorkshire Police say the pedestrian route is closed and are asking people to avoid the area in New Walk between Skeldergate and Blue Bridges.
A spokesman said: “Please be aware that we have have temporarily closed the riverside path from Skeldergate Bridge to Blue Bridge (New Walk) while we investigate the scene of a reported crime.
“Please use an alternative pedestrian route to and from the city centre until further notice.
“An update and appeal will be posted later this morning.”
