An historic building in York’s Coney Street is on the market after plans to turn it into a Hard Rock Cafe and hotel fell through.

The former TK Maxx site, which fronts onto Coney Street and Market Street, comes with a £5.5 million price tag – and is thought to be one of the most expensive properties marketed in York this year.

Planning permission has already been granted to turn the ground and basement levels into a restaurant or retail space and for a 64-room aparthotel on the upper floors.

Permission has also been granted to add an additional storey to the roof.

The Hard Rock Cafe, last year, announced that it planned to take over the four-storey building, in a move that would have created more than 75 jobs.

But The Press revealed in February that the US-based themed restaurant chain had abandoned the plans.

At the time, a Hard Rock Cafe spokesperson told us that “York remains an important market” for the business and “there is a vested interest in opening an outlet in York”.

The Hard Rock Cafe is yet to announce any plans to open elsewhere in York.
