Ian James Franklin, 33, alleged that he acted in self defence and in the defence of his wife and family immediately outside his front door when he hit Greg Marshall with a kitchen knife.
“He ran towards me. He tried to stab me. I had to stab him. If I hadn’t stabbed him, he would have killed me,” claimed Franklin.
He then left his home via the back gardens of houses along his street, climbing eight-foot fences before stopping in a shed where he cried himself to sleep.
“I was scared. I didn’t know Greg was dead. I thought he was coming back for me,” he claimed.
“We know Mr Marshall died from the stab wounds you caused,” said his barrister Nicholas Johnson KC. “How do you feel?”
“Ashamed, broken,” he replied.
He claimed he only used the knife twice.
The jury heard that Mr Marshall, 36, of York, was declared dead in York Hospital shortly after the confrontation between the two men early on August 17, 2024, and that he died from two stab wounds, one of which penetrated his heart and both of which penetrated his lungs.
They also heard that Mr Marshall had other wounds.
