'Absolutely amazing' night celebrates York's sporting talent at top venue

HUNDREDS of people flocked to York Barbican on Thursday night for the YO1 Radio Sports Awards 2025.

The evening of June 19 saw the climax to months-worth of excitement for the event, as the city crowned its flagship sporting talent, communities, and teams in a night to remember.

Managing Director of YO1 Radio and Media, Wayne Chadwick, said the "absolutely amazing" event was a privilege to bring back to York.

He added: "This is the first time that YO1 Radio has run this event, we've taken the baton over from people such as Paula Stainton at the York City Foundation and Keith Morris at the University of York.

"They've assisted us along the way, we've also had great help from Newsquest, our media partners.

"The thing about it is that it's an awards ceremony with a difference.

"It's not your normal sit around a table and have a meal, it's different, it's more inclusive. It's affordable and inclusive, it meant that everyone could be involved.

"Interspersing it with entertainment was, I think, a winner."

Hosted by YO1 Radio's Claire Pulpher, winners across 11 different categories were announced, as well as the Outstanding Contribution to Sport award.

The event - supported by headline sponsors York College & University Centre - was graced with the presence of British snooker legend Jimmy White, who took the stage for the Disability Sportsperson of the Year award.
