A YORK couple who first met at a scuba diving club party are celebrating 60 years of marriage together today (Thursday, July 31).

Janet Purt and husband Stan, both 83, who live in Stockton Lane, are celebrating six happy decades together after meeting for the first time at a party thrown for Stan’s scuba diving club in 1963.

The pair, who hail from Newcastle and Scarborough respectively, met in Scarborough’s Candlelight nightclub more than 62 years ago.

Stan, who was working as an electrical draughtsman at the time, was 21 when he first saw 20-year-old Janet, who had moved to the seaside town from Newcastle to train as a teacher.

He said: “I used to dive a lot, so we were at the nightclub for our annual ball. We invited the girls from the college down as we used to use their pool for our practice sessions.

"We met and it all went from there."

The two fell in love, moved to Janet’s native Newcastle, and married two years later in the Brunswick Chapel on Saturday, July 31, 1965, where they were escorted through the packed city to the church by mounted police.

They moved to York two years later where they settled in Stockton Lane with Stan continuing his career in engineering, eventually being poached by Nestle, whilst Janet worked as a teacher and at the job centre.
