Adult learning disability and mental health charity The Hut, in Clarence Gardens, officially reopened its site after months of refurbishment.
Joined by the Lord Mayor of York, trustees, and representatives from donation trusts and the National Lottery, spokespeople of the charity explained how they went from a disused public toilet, garden and empty building to a much-loved centre for their members.
Founded in 2011 by three psychiatric nurses, the building was initially rented by City of York Council. In 2019, they managed to complete an asset transfer of the two buildings they now use, and launched a five-year plan for their future in 2020.
After raising £300,000 in funds from the likes of the National Lottery, Kirkby Foundation, and Wolfson Foundation, The Hut's members now have a new bespoke space.
