The county's police say an Alsatian-type dog had to be put down by a police firearms officer in Bedale after it bit a man and a police officer on their legs.
Officers were called to the scene at 10.50pm on Friday (August 1) by the man, who is in his 60s, following the initial biting incident.
He had been walking home from the pub in the Market Place when he was attacked by the dog near the bowling club.
Officers located the dog near the fire station at around 11.30pm and repeated attempts were made to bring it under control, during which a police officer was bitten.
The dog managed to get away and it was tracked down to Queen Anne's Drive, off Firby Road, at 1.30am on Saturday.
