Residents claim St John Street in The Groves is the last original early Victorian street in the city centre which is totally domestic.
They say that one or two properties in the street already use wheelie bins and they cause regular problems for the elderly and mothers with prams when they are usually left blocking the narrow footpath.
They also say it would be easier to collect bins from their back lane and not the front of properties.
It's part of City of York Council's Bags to Bins scheme which was set to be rolled out to almost 2,800 homes in Clifton, Fishergate, Guildhall and Holgate from Monday, August 4.
The council has said that streets where properties had a forecourt space at the front or back of the property were considered appropriate for the upgrade to bins.
