The controversial sign which has appeared on the listed wall at Vita Student York in Lawrence Street
- has been branded 'a monstrosity' and an 'eyesore' by locals who doubt whether listed building consent was accured from City of York Council before it went up.
The student accommodation site in was previously for 140 years, St Joseph's Convent, home to the Poor Clares, an order of quiet, self-effacing nuns.
Today it's a sprawling campus of 13 buildings, with 501 rooms, and 644 students which opened in September 2017.
A spokesperson for Vita Student said the sign is only temporary and will be removed in the near future.
It has been reported to City of York Council where a spokesperson said: "This is an active enforcement case and we are unable to comment until a decision has been made."
In addition Fishergate ward councillor Conrad Whitcroft said: "While the message could be a positive in a different context, this appears to be promotion for a lettings company and I’m don't want to boost their advertising campaign by adding to the debate. This is now a matter for the local planning authority."
