Dan Tyssen, 34, from Dringhouses, York, has been skating since he was eight.
He said: “It’s the adrenalin, trying something new, knowing you might fall off but you carry on.”
On Monday, he opened the Tockwith Skate Shop, in a business park down Blind Lane on the western edge of the village.
The father of two has run the adjoining TAS Autocare garage next door for a year but has been in the garage trade for about 15 years.
He told the Press when we called at his new shop: “This was the office and waiting room. My kids are scooterers. Every time I needed a new scooter or a part, I had to travel for an hour. Every scooter place in York has closed.
“People are struggling to get them because it’s a dying trade. It might seem crazy opening a shop selling these things but it means there is no other business like it. However, it is something that is coming back into fashion.”
