The Healthwatch network is to close after the government announced the country-wide watchdog service would be absorbed into local councils and integrated care boards.
Healthwatch leaders in York have criticised the move and are now calling on members of the public to support its petition, which calls on the government to “protect the independence of local voices in health and care”.
The Healthwatch network, as The Press has reported, is an independent statutory body which patients can contact to improve NHS standards of care.
But, under the government proposals, people would be encouraged to share their feedback via the NHS app instead through Healthwatch.
Siân Balsom, the manager of Healthwatch York, said the service has “worked to bring more voices to decision making in the city” for more than 12 years.
She said Healthwatch York has “already heard from people across York who are worried about what might happen” if the service is abolished.
“We hope they, and others, will sign the petition and urge the government to make sure there is an independent place for everyone to share their experiences.”
