OSCAR’s Paediatric Brain Tumour Charity has joined forces with Menfulness to support men in the York area.
Matt Ward, OSCAR’s marketing manager, said the partnership will allow men to access professional mental health support and connect with others who “truly understand" their situation.
It will provide fathers and other male family members with access to professional counselling and informal social activities – such as games of football and walks – where they can build relationships with others facing similar challenges.
OSCAR’s was founded by Ian and Marie Hughes in memory of their nine-year-old son, Oscar Hughes, who died in 2014 from a brain tumour.
In 2020, Ian also died of a brain tumour and a few days after Ian’s funeral his son, four-year-old Milo, was diagnosed with the same disease and died a year later.
Matt told The Press the charity has found that “quite a lot of the time” fathers of children with brain tumours were “trying to be that kind of traditional, strong male figure”.
