A national expansion of free school meals has been welcomed in York

- with local politicians praising the move as a step in the right direction for tackling child poverty and supporting struggling families.

From the start of the 2026 academic year, every pupil in a household receiving universal credit will become eligible for Free School Meals (FSM), the Prime Minister has announced.

In York, the council already funds free school meals and breakfasts at Westfield, Burton Green and Fishergate primary schools through its Hungry Minds appeal.

Westfield ward councillor Emily Nelson said: "We’re seeing fantastic outcomes for children and families in Westfield ward.

"This had already resulted in almost 46,000 additional FSMs being provided since the initiative was launched last year.

"As the national announcement on expanding FSM eligibility confirms, the Westfield pilot is similarly putting money into the pockets of families struggling with the cost-of-living crisis."

The council’s Labour executive member for education, children and young people, Cllr Bob Webb, said the Government’s announcement as "fantastic news that can’t come soon enough."

He added: "I really welcome this and the benefit it will have on their ability to learn and achieve at school.
