Connor Abbott was found dead at his hotel room in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok on Sunday, September 22, last year.
Jon Heath, senior coroner for York and North Yorkshire, said the cause of death was morphine toxicity.
Identification was confirmed by a funeral director, the hearing at Northallerton Coroners’ Court on Tuesday (March 11) heard.
Mr Heath adjourned the inquest to a later date.
As The Press has reported, Mr Abbott, from Thirsk, was a well-known York City supporter who started following the team as a teenager at Bootham Crescent.
A Go Fund Me Page set up in memory of Mr Abbott described him as a “beloved son, brother, and a dear friend to countless people”.
Mr Abbott had a “passion for entertaining those around him”, it said, and was “known for his infectious energy and joy”.
“He was more than a friend – he was a source of laughter, happiness, and unforgettable memories to everyone who knew him,” the page added.
