A man has been jailed for a late-night attack on his former partner that left her with a deformed face.

Kenneth Shepherd, 36, repeatedly punched the woman in her home after spending the evening in the pub, said Rob Galley, prosecuting.

Twice she had to pick herself up after he knocked her down or pushed her to the floor and by the end, she had a broken jaw, her teeth had been moved in her mouth, which was bleeding, and she had banged the back of her head.

She told York Crown Court that now, more than a year later, she cannot bear to look at herself in a mirror or pictures because the attack has changed the appearance of her face and she regularly injures herself when brushing her teeth because she has no feeling in her lower mouth.

Shepherd, of Hamilton Drive, Holgate, pleaded guilty to causing the woman grievous bodily harm.

Jailing him for 22 months, Recorder Mark McKone KC said: “This was serious domestic violence causing a long term injury which will continue to affect the complainant.

“The public expect a man who causes serious injury to a woman to go to prison.”

For Shepherd, Rhianydd Clement said: “Alcohol of course played a part. He acknowledges that and he acknowledges he has a problem with binge drinking.”

“He can be a completely different person,” she said, handing in several character references.

Mr Galley said the couple had been in a relationship for eight years and split up in 2023.
