A man has been arrested in connection with a police incident which happened in the city centre on June 3.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeperson said: "Robert Elkes, aged 30, was arrested on June 5 and has been remanded in custody to appear at York Magistrates' Court today (June 6) charged with wounding with intent and possessing a knife."

Police said they were called to Walmgate in York by the ambulance service on June 3 where a man was taken to hospital with a suspected stab wound to his chest.

Officers guarded the scene and a cordon was in place between Margaret Street and Hope Street and local businesses closed their doors temporarily.
